"Are you sure you want to go further?" Andrea asked Eckhart. He nodded his head yes. The pair continued walking out the front door of the Genomex facility. The first hint of light startled Eckhart as Andrea opened the door and both stepped out into the sunlight. Eckhart began blinking his eyes. He felt them starting to tear up the more he blinked. His eyes were beginning to hurt. Andrea tried to reassure him it was alright. She told him to try to focus so his eyes could get adjusted to the sunlight.
"We can stand here for a few minutes." Andrea suggested.
"No, I'm alright." Eckhart gave a faint smile.
Andrea wasn't sure whether to take Eckhart's hand. She didn't want to do anything that might harm him. She kept her distance only slightly. They then began their walk down the concrete path.
"It feels warm." Eckhart said.
"It's summer."
"My god, I've almost forgotten what the seasons were."
Eckhart felt the warm sun hitting his face. No matter which way he tried he couldn't hide from it.
"I think it's getting too warm." Eckhart was almost in a panic. Andrea got a little closer this time.
"Try not to take it in too fast. It has been awhile. Just take baby steps." Andrea wanted to put her arm around him to help steady him, though Eckhart had his cane to help keep his balance, but she refrained from doing so
While the duo walked, neither noticed the awkward stares from people who were walking about the premises. They couldn't help but stare at this odd man, if he was a man, with his grey hair and oversized coat. Plus gloves and there was a pale complexion to his look too.
"Do you want to sit down for a moment?" Andrea asked. There was a bench nearby under a shady tree. "Yes, I think so." Eckhart responded quietly.
The pair walked over to the bench and sat down. As they sat down, Eckhart began hearing a sound. A low sound. It sounded like a singing of some kind. Andrea noticed him looking up at the tree. She smiled.
"There's a little community of birds up there." She pointed to where the birds were.
"Birds? Grey used to love listening to the birds in the park when we had our time alone together. There were ducks too, I remember. I used to enjoy days like this."
"You still can." Andrea tried to assure him.
"Like this?" Eckhart said angrily gesturing to the way he looked and the way he was dressed.
"I'm sorry." Andrea said.
"No. You have nothing to apologize for."
"You just need to take it one day at a time." She smiled at him.
Eckhart was suddenly startled by a loud sound. A machine going off. He turned to see a man not too far off with a lawn mower. Then the smell of the gas and the grass that was being cut combined began to waft past them. Eckhart was taking too much of it in and began coughing. This time Andrea had no choice but to touch him to pat him lightly on the back.
"Guess he decided to cut the grass today. He usually comes on Wednesdays. We really should move. You shouldn't be smelling this. We should start back." Andrea was worried. Eckhart shook his head no. "Let's continue." he said. "Let's go down this way then." Andrea pointed.
The duo were quiet for sometime with Eckhart taking in the various smells and sounds he seemed to had forgotten. Eckhart was beginning to feel too warm. The summer heat was becoming too much for him. Eckhart swore he could feel sweat coming down the sides of his face and that his faux skin was flinching up. He stopped to rub between his eyes and scratch his face. Andrea suddenly stopped him. If he continued he would risk some of the skin possibly peeling off.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean too...it's just..." Andrea stopped mid-sentence. Eckhart took hold of her hand and away from his face.
"No. I'm okay."
"We really should go back. Maybe we can do this some other time when it's not too warm like today."
"I think you're right. I think it's best we do go back."
They started back with Andrea taking another route to avoid the man cutting the grass. The people they walked past were still eying the odd man.
Eckhart and Andrea were greeted by two guards just waiting on the otherside of the door. The otherside where there was security and safety all around. They entered and the door closed behind them.
